English: This is the interior of Maeshowe - a Neolithic chambered cairn and grave situated on Mainland Orkney, Scotland. It is thought to be almost 5000 years old which makes it a similar age to the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, and yet it is in a very good state of preservation.

Inside there is a tomb which is enclosed in a 24 foot high man-made mound and has a central chamber the walls of which are made with flagstones each weighing up to 30 tons. You enter along a narrow passage that is 36 feet long (feeling like Indiana Jones) and once in the chamber you can see this ancient writing. The entrance corridor is aligned so that it lets the direct light of the setting sun into the chamber for a few days each side of the winter solstice. (22 December in 2019).

The Orkney Islands, and in particular "Mainland" Orkney are a veritable treasure trove of ancient sites with most readily available to visit.
