English: Nevers (Nièvre)
Le Beffroi, ou tour de l'Horloge. Situé dans l’ex-rue du commerce devenue rue François Mitterrand. Le comte de Nevers, Philippe II de Bourgogne, fit construire ce bâtiment dans le quartier des marchands, en 1398, pour servir au rez-de-chaussée de halles pour les bouchers, et à l'étage de salles de bailliage. La cour de bailliage, sous l'autorité du bailli, rendait la justice pour le Comte. En 1400, une tour fut rajoutée au bâtiment, aux frais des habitants et sous la direction de Jean des Amognes, bâtisseur de la Porte du Croux. Le beffroi étant instable, il fallut attendre presque 40 ans pour pouvoir doter la tour d'une horloge et de la cloche qui annonçait l'ouverture et la fermeture des portes de la ville, et cadençait le travail de la journée. Un guetteur signalait tout feu naissant ou l'apparition d'éventuels pillards.
