Description
English: 1827 map and elevation diagram of New Orleans area, showing projected route of proposed canal connecting the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain along what is now Elysian Fields Avenue.

This canal was never built. 3 years later this same route was selected for for the Pontchartrain Railroad. The dream of a canal from the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain was not realized until the construction of the Industrial Canal over 90 years later.

Map also shows developed sections of the city at the time; with faubourgs (suburbs) developed upriver (St. Mary) and downriver (Marigny) from the old city (now the "French Quarter"), also a few blocks "back of town" (away from the river, now Treme &c) and extending somewhat further back along Bayou Road (which formerly met what is now Gov. Nichols Street at the back of the Quarter). Note also the Carondolet Canal, and the Faubourg St. Jean town along Bayou St. Jean, not yet connected to the rest of the city by urbanization.
