When Mr. Astor succeeded to his fathers estate in1848 he was already wealthy. He had been very successfulin the fur trade, and was President of the American FurCompany. He had received $500,000 from an uncle andthe title to the Astor House property from his father. Tothe Astor Library he gave $250,000 in cash and $200,000 inbooks, which, with other bequests, swelled his total donationsto that institution to $550,000.
