Summary edit

Description Lot-2947-4: Barges are flat-bottomed craft which carry bulk goods such as wheat, coal and steel on inland and harbor waters. Some barges are very large. Some are self-propelled but most barges depend on tugs to tow them. This picture shows four covered barges being towed by one little tug. Sometimes large vessels are forced to anchor out in the harbor instead of berthing at the dock. In such cases, cargoes are transported between the vessel and the dock by barges. This process is called “lightering.” Image is a halftone. U.S. Marine Commission Photograph, 1946. Courtesy of the Library of Congress. (2016/07/01).
