24 Development and Expansion CURRENT HISTORY In the year of a modern hospital, caring for hundreds and thousandsof people, there are at least 730 working days of twelve hours each—thatis : the institution never rests ; its responsibilities are grave, its duties exact-ing, every minute counts. Hence, the history of twelve months of anyhospital effort is replete with great detail and much routine not likely tobe of special interest to even the best friends of such a place and such awork. The year which ended September 30, 1919, was a year of reconstruc-tion, a period of development and expansion; the Hospital, like everysimilar institution, was emerging from the shadow of the Great War.There are a score or more of bright points in the years record, pointsthat stand up as milestones of progress. In the first place, it is of vital importance that during the year theHospital cared for 9,628 human beings—4,653 children and 4,975 women,a very large number of patients. The Hospital thus j
