Summary edit
DescriptionNew York Port of Embarkation during World War II, MS Bantam (22593096077).jpg | Lot-10640-30: “New York Port of Embarkation during World War II.” MS Bantam moored at New York after loading of cargo just a few hours later from the image in 10640-29. This vessel should not be confused with the former Dutch cargo ship, SS Bantam, which was also acquired by the U.S. from the Netherlands during World War II. On March 28, 1943, nine Japanese D3A Val dive bombers attacked SS Bantam while at Oro Bay. She sank and was beached until after World War II when she was raised in 1946 and later sunk at sea by the Australian Navy. The MS Bantam, pictured, was returned to her owners in 1946 and continued service after changing hands until 1971. Album presented to United States Under Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson, Sr., 1940-45, deals with U.S. Army troops being transported to Europe for war, specific date unidentified. He became United States Secretary of War under President Harry S. Truman, 1945-1957. Patterson died in January 1922. (2015/11/13). Fair quality imagery. |
