nner atDelmonicos, in order that they might thus express their highestimation of his judicial and personal character, and theircommendation of the ability, impartiality, and efficiency withwhich he had discharged his official duties. He has not been anactive partizan, but has been a steadfast member of the Demo-cratic party. Mr Calvin was married, in June, 1852, to Mary Elizabeth Mer-rell of Watertown. She died in April, 1877, and two years laterhe was married to his second wife, Eliza Ann Weaver of NewYork. She died in September, 1886. He had no children byeither marriage. Mr. Calvin has never been a club man, object-ing to such organizations on principle as detrimental to domesticinterests. He is, however, a member of the Church Club, of theexecutive committee of the Church Temperance Society, and ofthe State and American Bar Association. He is a prominent andactive member of the Protestant Episcopal Church. In June,1881, he received the honorary degree of LL. D. from HobartCollege.

JOHN CASTREE AMONG- the numerous citizens of New York city of Irishorigin there may have been some more conspicuouslybrought before the public eye, but there have been few, if any, ofmore sterling worth to the home of their adoption than JohnCastree. Fintona, County Tyrone, Ireland, was his birthplace, where hefirst saw the light on February 17,1811. His mother died in hisinfancy. His father, who had been a colonel in the Britisharmy, came over some years later and spent the rest of his lifehere. John was only three years old when he was brought toNew York under his grandmothers care. He got his educationin the public schools, and entered the grocery store of his uncle,James Beatty, as an errand-boy. When he came to years of manhood he purchased the storefrom his uncle and conducted it on his own account. It was atthe corner of Washington and Jay streets. After a time hemoved it to the corner of Hudson and North Moore streets, thennear the heart of the fashionable part of the city. He
