OF ENGLAND After whom was named the Jamestown Settlement Jamestown Settlement 51 This was followed on December 10 (20), 1606, by directions forsailing prepared by his Majestys Council for Virginia. The first expedition for the First Colony in Virginia, consistingof three vessels, sailed forth on Saturday, December 30, 1606, fromLondon, under supreme command of Captain Christopher Newport.These were the Sarah Constant, Captain Newport (Admiral); theGodspeed, Captain Bartholomew Gosnold (Vice-Admiral); and apinnace, the Discovery, Captain John Ratcliffe. It has not been decided definitely just how many souls wereaboard these ships; but the statement of the Kings Council placesthe number at six score forming the expedition proper, as well ashalf a hundred sailors.
