Description
English: At the left, is a thoroughly modern FSA SLK carbon fibre crankset with 53/39 rings.

At the right is a thoroughly old school Shimano Ultegra 52/39 crankset made of good old fashioned aluminum. The FSA offers the latest in high modulus carbon fiber, the newer external bearing bottom bracket design, nickel plated chainrings with ramps and pins to aid shifting…. The Shimano crankset uses the older splined style internal cartridge bottom bracket, also has ramps and pins.

The FSA is indeed lighter, and is supposed to be stiffer, but mere mortals will never be turning the cranks with enough power to really notice the stiffness. So is the FSA really any better? I am not sure, I know that it offers the cachet that high end carbon parts bring to bikes, and that guys like to show off to their buds. I also know that the clear coat on the carbon scuffs up pretty easily. Which one is normally on my best bike? Well, you got me there, I’m a sucker for fashion too. It’s the one on the left
