DescriptionNewark Arcade, 4th Street, Newark, OH - 52545037477.jpg |
English: Opened in 1909, this indoor shopping arcade runs along the interior of the block between 3rd Street and 4th Street in Downtown Newark, and at one time featured multiple shops along the interior corridor of the building, with a skylight overhead allowing natural daylight to flood the interior of the building. The arcade was built to contain 23 stores, but at one point contained 30 businesses, a fountain inside the interior corridor, cold and warm storage in the basement, with a south annex being added to contain additional business space and the Arcade Theater in 1911, which extended the complex to West Main Street, with this section of the arcade later being demolished in 1957 to make way for a parking lot. The arcade features three entrances, one from the adjacent parking lot, providing easy access to parking from the arcade, and entrances on 3rd Street and 4th Street. The 4th Street entrance features a Renaissance Revival-style facade with a red brick exterior, deep overhanging eave with exposed rafter ends, triple one-over-one windows on the second floor, decorative brick and stone panels above the second story windows, brick in a variety of lay patterns on the facade, modified first floor retail shopfronts, and an entry doorway with a terra cotta facade featuring decorative motifs, a panel above the entry door with the word “Arcade” carved into the terra cotta panels, and a wrought iron balcony at the window above. The 3rd Street entrance, with a Beaux Arts-style facade, was cut through a 19th Century Italianate-style building known as the Irving House Hotel, the American House Hotel, the Fulton Hotel, and the Doty House Hotel at various points during its history, having originally been constructed in 1842. The section of the building’s facade that became part of the arcade that once matched its neighbors, but was modified when the arcade was built, with two bays of the facade being reconstructed into a single recessed bay with triple one-over-one windows on the second and third floor, an arch on the third floor with decorative trim and brackets at the top, an arched doorway at the base, and stucco cladding on the exterior, with the cornice, original windows, and retail shopfronts on this facade having been removed during renovations. The building is presently slated to be restored and reopened, having been unoccupied since being deemed unfit for human habitation due to structural and fire safety issues in 2018. The building is a contributing structure in the Newark Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. |
