d to 38 per cent.-, and in the fiscal year 1908-9the total was only 17 per cent. Some of this trade hasbeen captured by Canada and a still greater portion bythe United States, largely due to the increasing facilitiesin transportation between Newfoundland and these countries. The increasing proportion of shipments of fish almost directto Meditenanean ports has had something to do with the les-ening of trade connections with England. Twenty years agoall ,mr freighting to the Mediterranean was done entirely byEnglish schooners, now these have been displaced byFumess line of steamers, which ply fortnightly, and at seasonsweekly, between St. Johns and Liverpool. This line has Innup a big trade wholly in the carriage of fish, oil, lobsters andother products. The Allan steamers do a tracUsame way. and might do an even larger one but 1that their steamers go to Glasgow instead oftherefore do not give a direct connection withlines which plv to the Mediterranean. All this tends to lessen the trade connection between Englandand this country, and it has had a very injurious effect in reducing our connection with Bristol and other South of Englandports. The tendency has been to change the trade from Bristolto Liverpool. In the old days vessels went to Bristol withcargoes of fish and took back coal, brick, earthenware. &c., &c.These vessels cannot now obtain westbound freights, as nearlyeverything now comes from Liverpool t \e\\foundland via theAllan and Furness lines. The trade between Bristol and Newfoundland in the past wasconsiderable. After Guys settlement, three hundred years ago,the connection appears to have died out until somewhat over ahundred years ago, when the firm of Bennett cS: Morgan, theprincipals of which were Bristol men, established themselves inSt. Johns, in the vicinity of where Cloustons store, near the•• Market House. now stand
