Arrived at GovernmentHouse the Duke was met by His Excellency, Governor Boyle,and the Premier and cabinet, when immediately followed thepresentation of the address from the citizens read by Right Hon.Sir Wm. V. Whiteway, K.C.M.G., P.C., chairman of the citizensreception committee. This was followed by the presentation ofgifts from the people to their Royal Highnesses, both of whomresponded in fitting and appropriate terms. The royal partythen proceeded through the city to the site of the new court-house, and if other portions of their tour lacked the accompani-ment of the cheering multitude, such as one witnessed inTrafalgar square and the Strand on jubilee night in 1897, ormore recently in the same locality on Mafeking night, it was

Cheering is very dear to theheart of every Newfoundlander ; it is his way of testifying heis with you, and quite satisfied with the way things are going,and I am quite sure the royal party had no more genuine cheersgiven them since leaving Portsmouth than those which went upfrom the thousands of Newfoundland fishermen as the Dukeand Duchess drove in their triumphal car along the streets ofthe old city. Having laid the corner stone of the new court house withall the pomp and ceremonial incident to such occasions, theDuke and Duchess at 12:30, proceeded to the Princes Rink,and there one of the most impressive ceremonies of the wholevisit took place, namely, the singing of an anthem speciallycomposed for the occasion by Mr. McNeilly, K.C., by 6,000school children.
