Summary
editDescriptionNiche for a rope-roller in a pier of the Sankey Viaduct - geograph.org.uk - 78709.jpg |
English: Niche for a rope-roller in a pier of the Sankey Viaduct. The roller protected the rope and the stonework as the horse on the towpath drew the Mersey flat along the canal. The main cargoes were coal from the St. Helens coal-field, salt from Cheshire, manure from Liverpool, and copper from Anglesey. The last cargo was sugar, which went to the Sankey Sugar Works just south of the viaduct (so did not pass this way). This ceased in 1959, and the canal was abandoned in 1963. This section was infilled in about 1972. |
