  • Significance: The Japanese Shrine was constructed as part of William Welles Bosworth's design for the gardens of the country estate of John D. Rockefeller Sr., built between 1908 and 1910. The shrine is one of the earliest examples of Japanese architecture in the United States. Although it was originally built as a teahouse the structure has been referred to as the Japanese Shrine for at least half its existence. The shrine was designed and built by T. Uyeda of Japan...
