North Stradbroke Island, 30 km southeast of Brisbane, Australia, is one of the largest sand islands in the world. Sand mining and tourism are the island’s main industries.

Description

English: North Stradbroke Island, 30 km southeast of Brisbane, Australia, is one of the largest sand islands in the world. Sand mining and tourism are the island’s main industries. About 50 million tons of sand are mined each year, from which 500,000 tons of minerals are extracted. Recently, scientists have discovered that one of the island’s lakes, Blue Lake has been in the same chemical state for the past 7,500 years (according to the International Business Times). The lake is fed by an aquifer, and the water gets replaced every 35 days. The image was acquired October 1, 2009, covers an area of 25 x 43 km, and is located at 27.5 degrees south latitude, 153.4 degrees east longitude.
