| Description |
A portion of a large carved limestone relief from the Chinese en:Northern Qi Dynasty, dated c 570 AD. The relief features the Buddhist theme of the Western Paradise, the Pure Land reigned over by the Buddha of Infinite Light, or en:Amitabha in the en:Sanskrit language. This relief shows the Amitabha presiding in a pond while welcoming newly reborn souls emerging from lotus blossoms. Although seemingly barren of any applied painting in its currently worn state, it was once elaborately colored with bright paints, as there are still traces of paint on the relief. Of further significane, this is the first known piece of artork in China to depict the Western Paradise. It also features two large Chinese pavilion towers on its right and left sides. Besides the few Chinese stone-constructed pagodas from the 6th century that have survived, such as the 40 m tall Songyue Pagoda and the en:Four Gates Pagoda, this relief provides a decent artistic example of 6th century wooden Chinese architecture that has since perished.
