Northernmost Greenland 349 had been brought with us for use In case of sickness,and passing it to Astriip to take a thimbleful, I fol-lowed suit, and then christened the great bay spread-ing its white expanse before us Independence Bay,in honour of the date, July 4th. The great glacier atour right I named Academy Glacier, in honour of theAcademy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia ; and theUnited States Navy was remembered in the nameNavy Cliff, which I gave to the giant cliff on whichwe stood. Then Astriip and I completed the cairn on NavyCliff. In the centre of this cairn I placed a tightlycorked bottle containing an account of the expedi-tion, its aims and objects, with portraits of all themembers, taken from the New York Sun of June 6,1891, and the following record : North Greenland Expedition of 1891-92, Robert E.Peary, Civil Engineer, United States Navy,Commanding. July 4, 1892, latitude 8i 37 5 . Have this day, with one companion, Eivind Astriip, and eight•dogs, reached this po
