Dr. Ida Kahn DR. IDA KAHN CHILDHOOD IN THREE COUNTRIES BY the time little Ida Kahn first openedher eyes in Kiukiang, China, little girlshad become a drug on the market in herfamily. Her parents had long been eager fora son, but each of the five babies who hadcome was a daughter, and now this sixth onewas a little girl, too. According to Chinesecustom, they called in the old blind fortune-teller to declare her fate and give advice con-cerning her future. His verdict was discour-aging, for he told them that she must be killedor given away to another family, since as longas she remained in the home the long-desiredson would never come to them. The parentswere not willing to end the little life, so theydetermined to engage the baby to a little boyin a neighbouring family, and give her to thefamily of her betrothed to bring up.
