Description
English: In Western Europe, after an unusually dry and hot spring, disastrous wildfires have been destroying large portions of land in the past few weeks, and have forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people from their homes. In Spain alone, more than 50,000 hectares of land have burnt in the past week, according to the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS). The CEMS Rapid Mapping Team has been activated to monitor wildfires twice in Spain within one week (EMSR590 in Las Hurdes – Sierra de Francia and EMSR597 in Aragon), and twelve times in Europe since the beginning of July 2022. This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites on 19 July 2022, shows the active fires ongoing in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula. Data retrieved by Copernicus Sentinel satellites is key in the detection and monitoring of wildfires in Europe and globally, allowing to locate active hotspots and delineate burnt areas at high resolution.
