Those rather short stone pillars marked the area called Collacchio reserved for Grandmasters only. The ‘Commoners’ ( the Maltese ) were not allowed to roam about as they pleased and such areas were reserved for the Rulers, their friends and their staff. Some areas in Vittoriosa, especially the Main Square and streets leading to it, one could also see several similar ones in the past. However, O.B.Carter's drawing was taken during British rule and when Senglea was a well inhabited town and well after the peninsula stopped being used as a hunting ground by the Knights; it should therefore be likely considered artistic license.
