O economista madeirense Eduardo Jesus (1969-) lançou, a 17 de março de 2015, o livro “O primeiro automóvel na Madeira”, um Wolseley 10 h.p., de 1904, propriedade de Bernard Harvey Foster (1876-1937). É resultado de um grande trabalho de investigação que o ex-presidente da delegação na Madeira da Ordem dos Economistas reuniu numa obra que agora partilha. Uma obra, que refere, não quis que fosse um simples livro acerca de um carro, pese embora tenha um valor histórico muito forte. Por isso optou por uma obra mais abrangente, dedicando logo o primeiro capítulo à descrição do que era a Madeira no início do século XX. Procura contextualizar e mostrar «como se vivia na ilha, o que aconteceu então de relevante, as inovações que ocorreram na ilha, quem nos visitava e onde ficavam hospedados, uma referência à visita régia, aos transportes que existiam, incluindo o carro americano e o comboio, a regulamentação da cabotagem, e por aí adiante». |
