| Description |
English: Oak Ridge X-10 Graphite Reactor Access Room. From this room, engineers and scientists could access the interior of the reactor for experiments and other reasons.
Built as part of the Manhattan Project, X10 was the first-ever production reactor (and the second ever reactor after Chicago Pile 1). It acted as a proof of concept for the reactors that would produce materials for the first nuclear bombs. The concrete face is 44 by 44 feet (13.4 metres). It is part of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a designated National Historic Landmark, and is open for guided tours. |
