Summary edit
DescriptionOakwood Underground Station, Piccadilly Line - geograph.org.uk - 43068.jpg |
English: Oakwood Underground Station, Piccadilly Line. Oakwood Underground Station on the Piccadilly line was designed by Charles Holden. The station was originally called Enfield West, but because this caused confusion it was re-named Oakwood. In the early 1950s the coat of arms of the Sassoon family, who had owned the mansion Trent Park House, was displayed above the benches on the platform. I cannot remember when they were removed. Oakwood also used to have an illuminated sign outside saying Oakwood, but this was replaced with the standard sign saying Underground some years ago. Because it is such an outstanding building the shops on either side could not be more than one storey high, thereby keeping the view. |
