Summary edit

Description
English: Oakwood Underground Station, 6 April 2023. The station was opened in March 1933, on the 1932-33 extension of the Piccadilly Line from Finsbury Park to Cockfosters.

The station was originally named Enfield West, renamed Enfield West (Oakwood) in 1934 and then simply Oakwood in 1946. It was designed by Charles Holden, consultant architect to the Underground Electric Railways of London and in European Moderne style.

The station building is proportioned as a ‘double cube’ and is similar to his station at Acton Town, itself a refinement on his earlier station at Sudbury Town. Owing to pressure of work at Holden’s practice, he sub-contracted much of the detailed design work to another consultant architect, Charles H James. Further, Holden delegated the design of the platform canopies to Stanley Heaps, the Chief Architect of the UERL. It is a Grade II* listed building.

Pictured is an original Piccadilly Line blue clock on the wall of the ticket hall.
