lun-teered in the War of Twelve, but afterwards joined the Regulars.He distinguished himself at the battle of Fort Meigs, and waspromoted to a colonelcy in the regular army. After the war, whenthe Missouri lands were opened, he was made land register ofthat territory. Lowry died in Steubenville in 1843. He was a member ofthe State Legislature in 1823-24 and of the Senate in 1825-6. Itwas during his last year as Senator that Henry Clay was invited tospeak in Steubenville on what was then known as the Americansystem (the protective tariff). A big public dinner was given,and speeches were made by Clay, James Ross, Senator fromPennsylvania, and one of the founders of Steubenville, and byJohn C. Wright, member of Congress from the district. Claystoast was — J^^^^^on County: Its Green Hills, its Flocks andits Fleeces. Alikanna was thenknown as Speakersburg, having been laid out as a town duringthe boom period of 1814. Wm. Lowry occupied the building in which The Heraldwas estabHshed as his office as the pubHc surveyor and lived inthe adjoining brick. James Wilson was brought here from Philadelphia by JudgeWright to edit The Herald in 1815. Wilson was a pupil ofDuane of The Philadelphia Aurora, then perhaps the most prom-inent Democratic paper in the country.
