Description

These are the two microphones I use in the studio - both are Oktava MK219 large-diaphragm condenser mikes, and although I referred to them in the photo title as "twins", there's actually seven years between them...

The mike on the left is the older one. I bought it in 2000 from Digital Village in west London, in a package with a Joemeek VC3Q pre-amp/compressor (see separate photo in the set). I've always tried to take good care of them both (keeping the mike in its case unless I'm using it, etc.), so the mike is more or less in original condition.

I've read that Oktava was originally founded in 1927 as the Soviet Union's state microphone manufacturer. Oktava has a reputation for making high-quality mikes for very reasonable prices; my first MK219 cost about £100 as part of the package with the VC3Q. I was so impressed with the mike's performance over the years that in 2007, I decided to buy another MK219 to 'keep it company' (or more truthfully, so I had a 'stereo pair' in case I needed them).

The newer mike (on the right) has a 'badge' printed on the front and back in Russian and English respectively, calling the model an "80th Anniversary Edition". Well, happy birthday, Oktava - here's hoping the 'twins' here will give many more years' sterling service at Sidingsound.
