Summary edit

Description
English: Old harbour wall at Port Gaverne.
  • Unlike today, Port Gaverne was a very busy port in the 19th century.
  • On the north side of the cove, there is a wagon way carved into the rock where the Delabole Slate Company shipped out its slate. The 1859 Murrays Handbook of Devon and Cornwall records that about 1,000 men were employed, producing 120 tonnes of slate per day. The slate was cut and hauled six miles to Port Gaverne where it was loaded onto vessels moored in the harbour area. It would take thirty wagons, pulled by over a hundred horses to load a sixty ton ship.
