English: Western Kentucky's Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave on Earth, with 426 mapped miles as of March 2024. This old shovel is near the modern tourist trail in Main Cave, the main trunk passage through Mammoth Cave Ridge. At first glance, one would consider this to be garbage and remove it from this natural setting. The American government considers any trash that is over 50 years old (an arbitrary number) to be an historical artifact, so it remains where it is. It probably dates to the "CCC era" of Mammoth Cave - this refers to laborers in the "Civilian Conservation Corps". In the 1930s, those people worked on surface and underground projects. The traditional tourist trails in the cave consisted of long series of more-or-less flat rocks. Some stretches of the old trail are still present and visible in the Main Cave. The CCC work included replacing that trail system with the modern trail, which is floored by compacted, fine-grained sediments and is ~free of large rocks. In recent years, the park has been installing boardwalks atop the CCC trails.
