yard; to the right, McCooks house; while beyond these, tothe northward, was a field of light sandy loam, from which a potato crop had l)eenremoved. Here we found a strip of land, including the yard and extending aboutone hundred and fifty yards along the side of the field next the l)ay, that wasstrewn with abundant evidences of former Indian occupation. There was a pro-fusion of liroken pottery, of which we collected some of the larger pieces, togetherwith a number of whole and broken stone celts, and quite a varied assortment ofarrowheads. Xo ash-beds were observed, as any that may have been there, when, the land Avas cleared, have long since been obliterated, as the ground has been undercultivation for many years. This field was an ideal spot for a village site, as it lies wholly within the bay,and even to-day a fringe of large trees along the upper part of the l)ank offers ashelter from the prevailing west winds; Avhile the roots, deep amongst tlie pebbles. 84 ARCHAEOLOGICAL EEPOET.

The light sandy loam of the field is underlaid by aLaurentian outlier of the hills to the north. This rock, which outcrops at thewharf, and is mostly red granite, forms the shore of the river down stream toPowells Bay, and. rises.^in places, to upwards of tbirty feet above the lake. The Haunted House. A1)out a mile l)elow MeCooks, we examined a cut ))ank of impure clay, on thetop of which, some twenty feet above the water, there is a small log shanty calledthe Haunted Hou.se. At the foot of the l)ank we collected some fragments ofstone celts, flints and arrowheads, that had doubtless come from the top of thel)ank. wliich exposes a surface soil of sandy loam, over a foot deep. Some fieldsl)eyoiid were either in stubble, or long after-grass, which effectually hid any relicsthat may have been there. This is about the loveliest spot on Lake Deschenes, withelm
