Tijdens de Grote Oorlog was de Onze-Lieve –Vrouwhoekje site een vooruitgeschoven stelling met een belangrijke uitkijkpost. De ruïne van de kerktoren werd bewaard als oorlogsmonument. De gedenkkapel, Onze Lieve Vrouw der Zege werd opgericht na de Eerste Wereldoorlog ter gedachtenis van haar miraculeuze bescherming. Tal van andere monumenten en zuiltjes werden opgericht ter ere van de eenheden die deelnamen aan de gevechten tijdens de vier jaar durende oorlog.
