Summary edit

Description

Oolitic ironstone (oolitic hematite) from the Silurian of New York State, USA.

This is a scarce sedimentary lithology - oolitic ironstone. The dominant grains are rounded oolites and peloids composed of rusty-red hematite (iron oxide, Fe2O3). Marine macrofossil fragments are also present.

This unusual rock comes from the Early Silurian-aged Clinton Group of New York State. It is derived from a hematite-rich horizon that was mined as a source of iron ore in the late 1800s. Ironstone is present in Clinton and Clinton-equivalents at multiple sites in eastern America, from New York to Alabama to Ohio.

Stratigraphy: Furnaceville Hematite (= Seneca Park Bed), Brewer Dock Member, Reynales Limestone, Llandoverian Series, Lower Silurian

Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed site in Wayne County (probably an old iron mine in the Furnaceville area, north of the town of Ontario), western New York State, USA
