Afrikaans: Oostelike sypaneel van die Krugerstandbeeld op Kerkplein, Pretoria. Veldkornet Paul Kruger dra die lyk van die gesneuwelde Kommandant-generaal Piet Potgieter oor die skans voor Makapansgat (Ndebele: Moshate), November 1854.
Die beleg van die grot het van 25 Oktober tot 21 November 1854 geduur. Op 6 November was Piet Potgieter besig om die skanse voor die grotingang van bo te bespied, toe hy deur 'n sluipskutterkoeël uit die holkrans getref is. Hy het vooroor getuimel en voor die grotingang beland. Om waarskynlike rituele lykskending te voorkom is sy lyk deur die 29-jarige Paul Kruger en 'n Tsonga-manskap van Zoutpansberg oor die 1,8 m hoë skans gedra. Potgieter se kis is onder erebegeleiding na sy plaas Middelfontein (sowat 20 km noord van Nylstroom) vervoer waar hy begrawe is. Die plaket en inskripsie was in 2013 reeds in 'n toestand van verwaarlosing. Ook het een van die bronspenne (regs onder) wat dit in posisie moes hou reeds ontbreek. Op 18 Julie 2023 het twee persone oor die beskermende heining gespring en die plaket probeer steel, maar is op heter daad deur die polisie gearresteer.[1] Die Tshwane-metroraad en die FAK sou dan die paneel van die Pretoria Sentraal-polisiekantoor na die Ditsong-kunsmuseum neem, waar dit in 2024 steeds in 'n kluis geberg word, om later gerestoureer te word. The siege of the cave lasted from 25 October to 21 November 1854. On 6 November Piet Potgieter was inspecting the barricaded cave entrance from a precipice above. When struck by the sniper bullet, he tumbled forward and landed at the entrance to the cave. To rescue his body from probable ritual mutilation, it was retrieved from behind the 1,8 m high barricade by the 29 year old Paul Kruger and a Tsonga private from Zoutpansberg. Potgieter's coffin was transported by a guard of honor to his farm Middelfontein (some 20 km north of Nylstroom), where he was buried.[2] Français : Le siège de Makapan décrit sur l'un des panneaux de la statue de Paul Kruger à Pretoria
