The points for dividing the bone being at the caninetooth, and at the origin of the ramus, a vertical incision is madethrough the lip to the base of the chin. Another incision, start-ing from the middle of the posterior part of the ramus of the jaw,is carried down to the angle, and then along the base of the jaw tothe vertical incision at the chin. The flap is dissected off from thebone, and reflected upward on the cheek. The first molar tooth isremoved to give room to the saw in dividing the bone. The boneis next separated by dissection from the soft parts on its inner face,and a guttered instrument passed below it, on the groove of whichthe chain saw of Jeffrey is passed, as seen in the drawing, for thepurpose of making the section of the bone.
