KIRKGUNZEON forthar, which chapeliy, forming the north-easternsection of Markinch parish, had a separate status tillthe beginning of the 17th century, and has bequeathedto places in and near it the names of Kirkforthar Woodand Hilton of Kirkforthar.—Ore?. Sur., sh. 40, 1867. Kirkgunzeon, a post-ofBce village and a parish of SEKirkcudbrightshire. The village stands, 190 feet abovesea-level, on Kirkgunzeon Lane or Burn, \ mile WNWof Kirkgunzeon station on the Glasgow and South-western railway, this being 10; miles SW of Dumfriesand ^\ NNE of Dalbeattie. It was originally calledKirkwiuong or Kirkwinnyn, from the same saint whogave name to Kilavinxing in Ayrshire. The parish, containing also the stations of Killywhanand Southwick, 2 miles NNE and 2^ SSW of Kirk-gunzeon station, is bounded N by Lochrutton, E byNewabbey, SE and S by Colvend, and SW, AV, and NWby Urr. Its utmost length, ftom N to S, is 6; miles ;its utmost breadth, from E to W, is 4^ miles; and itsarea is 11,956^ acres. Ki
