Tay Street, in which are some of thofinest buildings in the city. In order, towards the W,the following streets run parallel to Tay Street for moreor less of its length : Speygate and Watergate, betweenCanal Street and High Street ; Princes Street, whichcontinues the road from Edinburgh from the N marginof the South Inch to South Street, whence St JohnStreet, a few yards to the E, leads to High Street,between which and tho bridge George Street runs;Meal Vennel, between South and High Streets ; ScottStreet, between Kings Place and South Street; thebroad thoroughfare, known successively as King Street,South Methven Street, and Methven Street, and run-ning due N and S the entire way from Kings Placeto the S to Atholl Street in the N. Still furtherW Pomarium and Leonard Street, the latter leadingfrom the General Railway Terminus, converge at theS\V end of Hospital Street, and are carried N in NewRow to High Street. Caledonian Road also runs Nfrom tho terminus, and continues past the Perth

The numerous connecting short streetsin that quarter are of all characters, new, old, andrenovated. All the streets at one time lay on so low alevel as to be constantly liable to inundations from theriver; but a long process of improvement has raisedthem to their present level. The buildings were not awhit better than those of other Scottish towns ; and thestreets of Perth were just as neglected and filthy ; butvery great improvements have been successfully carriedthrough; and the Fair City is by no means behindits neighbours in cleanliness and healthiness.
