ORKNEY ORKNEY strait from 2 to 3 miles broad where the PentlandFirth is, with a long pointed projection passing bySwona through the Sound of Hoxa into Scapa Flow, alittle beyond Roan Head, at the NE corner of Flotta ;and from this a narrow strait, about a mile wide, wouldpass along the SW side of Hoy. If these sounds are,however, of moderate depth, their number and thebroken and winding outline of the coast are evidences ofthe hard struggle that constantly takes place betweenthe land and the Atlantic surge. The intricate indentedcoast-line, worn into creeks and caves, and overhangingcliffs; the crags and skerries, and sea stacks, once apart of the solid land, but now isolated among thebreakers ; the huge piles of fragments that lie on thebeach, or have been heaped far up above the tide-mark,tell only too plainly how vain is the resistance, even ofthe hardest rocks, to the onward march of the ocean.The rate of waste along some parts of these islands is sorapid as to be distinctly appre
