Summary edit

Description
English: Ornamental pond in front of Howick Hall The coach-house can be seen beyond. Howick has been in the ownership of the Grey family since the 14th century. The Hall was built in 1782. Although the pond is an attractive shape, it is actually a fire pond, providing a source of water in the event of fire. After a disastrous fire in 1926, the insurers demanded an immediate source of water close at hand. The pond replaced a large rhododendron (information supplied by Peter Regan). Following the fire, the Hall was comprehensively redesigned and rebuilt in 1928.

The Greys were a famous family of military men and politicians, the most renowned of whom was the 2nd Earl Grey who became Prime Minister in 1830. The family gave their name to "Earl Grey" tea.

The Hall is not open to the public, but the extensive gardens and arboretum are a popular visitor attraction. http://www.howickhallgardens.org.uk/index.asp
