Schlegel has only described the female, which has the upper parts ofa dark ash-colour. I have also described the male, which has these partsof a dark, somewhat glossy black colour. Gould, lastly, has given twofigures of this species, saying that he believes that they represent male andfemale; but in reality these are the same, and only represent the not quiteadult female, with the upper parts ashy and with some small black patcheson the middle of the breast: the adult female has on the middle of the breasta large black area, as has the male. Gould, who has done me the honour ofquoting me, appears not to have paid attention to the sexual differenceswhich I pointed out! s 2

Though this bird has been figured before, yet such a fine species deservesan illustration corresponding to its beauty, which I hope has now beeneifected. The full synonymy is given in Dr. Finschs Papageien, vol. ii. p. 800;I have not repeated it here. The following translations refer to this species. Briiggemann, Beitrage zur Orn. von Celeb, und Sangir (Contributionsto the Ornithology of Celebes and Sangir), in Abh. d. naturw. Ver.Bremen, v. p. 41 (1876) :— Fifteen specimens, two through Von Rosenberg. Two specimens, inthe collection of Dr. Fischer, do not bear the mark Sangir; and it istherefore to be supposed that these two birds were shot on Ce
