English: Artist's impression of waves, with different frequencies, travelling in the inner layers of a star. Pure sound (or pressure) waves spend most of their time in the outer envelope and are directly visible at the stars' surface. Pure gravity waves propagate in the radiative interior and hold information on the stellar core. In red giants, the two are coupled together and the resulting waves sense all layers, thus revealing information of the stars' deepest interior.
Português: Imagem artística de ondas, de diferentes frequências, a propagarem-se nas camadas interiores de uma estrela. As ondas sonoras (ou de pressão) passam a maior parte do seu tempo na camada mais exterior da estrela e são detetáveis à superfície. As ondas de gravidade atravessam a zona radiativa e contêm informação acerda do núcleo. Nas gigantes vermelhas, estes dois tipos de onda estão acoplados e as ondas resultantes transmitem informação de todas as camadas, revelando informação preciosa acerca das camadas mais interiores. |
