1R0ND van AMSTERDAM DE OUDE OMMURINGEN VERDWIJNEN. 73 vlak, zie het historisch plan dezer stad, afb. N°. 40, voorzag zich vaneen nieuwen verdedigingsgordel, ter omgaande breedte van 180 M.,behalve de daar buiten uitspringende 17 dwingers, vernieuwde tevenshare poorten, bruggen en magazijnen, en voorzag zich van beter enmeer geschut. En naarmate die nieuwe werken vorderden, verdweende oude ommuring met de oude torens, poorten en aangelegen wal;de daardoor vrijgekomen grond werd nu verkaveld tot huiserven, debuitengracht veranderd in een binnengracht en van de oude verdedi-gingswerken, die vijf eeuwen trouw dienst hadden gedaan, was om-streeks 1630 niets meer overig dan de nu binnenpoorten gewordenA- en Poelpoort. Al het overige was, behoudens enkele fundeeringen,zoo goed als spoorloos verdwenen en slechts uit het beloop en uit dennaam van enkele oude straten blijkt nu nog het beloop en den omtrekharer vroegere ommuring. Hetzelfde wat Groningen deed, dat deed ook Amsterdam,ook zij nam
