The next morning the Federal armywithdrew to Harrisons Landing on theJames River. Thus ended the Seven DaysBattles, during which the Federal armylost about twenty thousand men in killed,wounded and prisoners, fifty-two pieces ofartillery, thirty-five thousand stand of arms,and an enormous quantity of stores of allkinds. The Confederate loss was nineteenthousand five hundred and thirty-three killed,wounded and missing. The retreat of McClellans army threw theNorth into the deepest despondency.
