THE FRENCH IN THE VALLEY OF THE MISSISSIPPI 265 Cabokia were formed around the stations ofthe missionaries on the east bank of the Mis-sissippi, above the mouth of the Ohio. TheFrench population in America grew veryslowly, however. In 1690 the population ofCanada was only twelve hundred ; that, ofAcadia, or Nova Scotia, less than one thou-sand ; and that of Louisiana less than fivehundred. France had formed a deliberate and mag-nificent plan with respect to her Americanpossessions. She meant to build up a mightyempire in the valley of the Mississippi,extending from the great lakes to the Gulfof Mexico, and touching Canada. Her effortsto accomplish this were lavish and persistent,but the unhealthiness of the climate, and thealmost constant wars with the Natchez andChickasaw Indians disheartened the settlers,and the French population grew so slowlythat it could not accomplish the destinydemanded of it by the government at home./As late as 1740 Louisiana contained onlyabout five thousand
