about seventy-five feetin width, flowing almost due south. As we ascended it, anarrow inlet became visible in the right bank, which led intoa good-sized lagoon about as wide as the river, which hadprobably been formed by the excavation of the marsh. Thislagoon bounded the north and part of the east sides of theisland. The prevailing wind was from the east and thisprobably accounted for the line of small trees and bushesbeing almost altogether on the western bank.
