Oh, well have to have it cradledsomehow. Ive got an old cradle here.Didnt you ever cradle grain ? Why, yes, but its morn twentyyears sence I held a cradle. Id hev topractice some before I could go in ando any now. You could learn to do it;itd come lots easier to yu n mowinwith a scythe. Wheres yr cradle? We watched the old mans wideswing and low, almost squatting motion. I believe I could do it, said theRebel thoughtfully, I believe Ill try itto-day. After the neighbor had gone on upthe road he took his cradle to the wheatfield. We could see his straw hat mov-ing slowly about the little field, and avisitor drove out to talk to him. Theycame back to the house together, andthe Rebel said to me: He thinks wed get our wheat inearlier if I went up to the Hollow andgot old man Bixby to cradle it for me.

But the man had gone for the day,and after our caller had gone, the Rebelcommented: Do you know I am really glad thatman was not at home. I want to cradlethat wheat myself, and I believe I canget it done before he comes home to-night. Im going to try, anyway. Presently he came in, hot and thirsty,to stiffen another joint in the old cradle,and said: Oh, Im coming along. David mightas well come out and bind up somesheaves. It goes better all the time. Itell you its hot, and it takes a brandnew set of muscles! After dinner we all went out into thewheat field. The Rebel swung hiscradle quite confidently, I raked theshining, yellow stalks into bundles forone little boy to bind with twistedbunches of wheat, and the littlest boycarried sheaves to stand in shocks.
