Summary edit

Description
English: As seen on a frigid February 2022 evening, a park bench overlooks the memorial boulder at Ahwaga Park in Owego, New York. Ahwaga is the smaller of the two riverfront parks that bookend the Owego Riverwalk, both of which were established in 1926 under the initiative of village president Charles D. Marvin to mark the sesquicentennial of the Declaration of Independence. It takes its name from an Iroquois word meaning "where the valley widens", from which the place name Owego is also derived. The boulder was hauled to its site from the farmstead of Ray Sabin in the nearby village of Spencer and dedicated the following August 9th as part of the celebrations for Old Home Week, with help from several descendants of pioneer village resident James McMaster. The bronze tablet, appended to the boulder by the Gorham Manufacturing Company of New York City, recounts the tale of the Sullivan Expedition, during which "on the site of Owego, Aug. 19-20, 1779 encamped 3,000 Continental soldiers: the union of General Clinton's army, which had advanced from Otsego Lake with a convoy of 208 bateaux, and a detachment under General Poor from General Sullivan's army. Then at Tioga Point, as a part of the campaign against the hostile Iroquois, the abandoned Indian village of Owagea was burned".
