Description

When Monica’s husband started having seizures and could not continue with his job as a construction worker, life became really hard as he was the sole provider for the family of eight.

“My children had to learn to survive. I would send them to bed without food. We could not afford rent so were forced to move from one house to another.”

Since joining up with MSDP, Monica now sorts through plastics for a wage of Kshs 300 (£2) a day. “This money has really helped me, especially now that the food prices have shot up. Right now a packet of maize flour costs Kshs 150 (£1). Without this money I definitely would not have been able to afford that.”

Monica intends to put aside some of her earnings so she can start a small business start selling vegetables to her neighbours. “I never ever want to send my children to bed hungry again, so am using the money I am earning wisely. Monica’s husband is also receiving treatment and they can now afford his medication.
