Summary edit

Description
English: The P. S. Humphrey House, 332 Goundry Street, North Tonawanda, New York, as seen in August 2021. One of the few Charles Day Swan-designed houses to be located outside the Buffalo city limits, the 1889 Humphrey House is nonetheless very much a typical example of the architect's preferred Shingle Style. Notice the cross-gabled roof, wherein an enormous projecting frontal gable (at the center of which you'll find a recessed double window shaded by a bowed projection) contrasts with an even larger, sprawling side gable. Interestingly, there's a certain Romanesque ambience that makes itself apparent on the ground floor, where the color of the shingle siding switches from sage green to earth brown, a pair of stout and stubby columns flank a projecting entrance stairway, and a round arch tops the window at the far right. Unlike most of the prominent figures in 19th-century North Tonawanda, Paschal Smith Humphrey (1851-1937) earned his renown not as a lumberman but as a political figure (a lifelong Republican, his political career began at the age of 21 with his appointment to Tonawanda town clerk and culminated with a six-year term as collector of internal revenue; he also served as an alternate at the 1888 Republican National Convention) and in the insurance business (he was senior partner in the firm of Humphrey & Vandervoort and a charter member of the Buffalo Association of Fire Underwriters). Humphrey lived in the house until his death.
