4. JEANNE ASSISTE AU SACRE DE CHARLES VII, A REIMS. Jeanne devait accomplir sa mission : conduire le dauphin à Reims et l'y faire sacrer. Elle se heurta cependant à la mauvaise volonté de La Trémoille lequel était tout-puissant et dont le roi ne savait pas se débarrasser. Jeanne, qui prétendait «ne durer qu'un an » obtint gain de cause et tandis que le roi faisait ses préparatifs, elle menait une foudroyante campagne qui, en une semaine, faisait tomber entre ses mains Jargeau, le pont de Meung, Beaugency et se terminait le 19 juin à Patay, par la défaite écrasante des Anglais, lesquels perdirent un de leurs plus fameux capitaines : Talbot. Le roi ne se décidait pas à partir et La Trémoille, toujours hostile, empêcha !a prise d'Auxerre. Troyes voulut résister mais aux premières menaces d'assaut la ville se rendit, entraînant avec elle la soumission de Reims et de Châlons. C'est le 16 juillet que l'armée entre dans la ville du sacre et le lendemain avait lieu l'imposante cérémonie où Jeanne et son étendard eurent la place d'honneur. |
