4. CASERTA - LE PALAIS ROYAL. La première pierre du palais de Caserta (près de Naples) fut posée en 1751. à l'endroit même ou se trouvait. depuis le siècle précédent, une des résidences du duc de Caserta, Andrea Matteo Acquaviva. Ce palais, remarquable par la régularité de son plan et l'ampleur de ses proportions, est l'œuvre de Luigi Vanvitelli, architecte de Saint-Pierre A Rome. Vanvitelli a dirige également la plantation et l'arrangement des jardins, dessinés dans le goût de ceux de Versailles et, depuis, transformes partiellement en jardins à l'anglaise par Francesco Colicini. On appelle souvent Caserta le Versailles des anciens rois de Naples. On y admire, outre les petits temples en marbre et les pavillons d'agrément. de superbes bassins et des cascades qu'alimente un aqueduc long de près de deux lieues et dont la construction, par Vanvitelli, dura quinze ans et coûta des sommes énormes. C'est, sans contredit, l'ouvrage de ce genre le plus important et le plus hardi du XVIIIe siècle. Les.avenues et les alentours du palais de Caserta sont magnifiques. |
